JAKARTA — Indonesia’s growing appetite for premium whisky has attracted two of Scotland’s established single malt producers, Glengoyne and Tamdhu, which officially entered the Indonesian market through an exclusive launch event titled Unveiling The Cask at Cohiba Atmosphere Jakarta on Thursday.

The invitation-only event brought together around 60 guests, including industry professionals, whisky collectors, enthusiasts, media representatives and public figures, highlighting what distributors see as increasing interest in premium single malts among Indonesian consumers.

The arrival of the two brands comes as Indonesia’s whisky market continues to evolve beyond brand recognition alone. Consumers are increasingly seeking to understand the heritage of a distillery, the influence of cask maturation and the craftsmanship behind each bottle, reflecting a broader shift in appreciation for premium spirits.

Founded in 1833, Glengoyne is widely recognized for operating one of Scotland’s slowest distillation processes. The Highland distillery has built its reputation on producing elegant and well-balanced whiskies, with layered notes of honey, orchard fruits, gentle spices and oak developed through a deliberately unhurried production philosophy.

Tamdhu, established in 1897, offers a contrasting style. Every expression is matured exclusively in Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a richer profile characterized by dried fruits, dark chocolate, warm spices and a full-bodied texture.

Guests at the launch sampled four expressions — Glengoyne 15 Year Old, Glengoyne 18 Year Old, Tamdhu 15 Year Old and Tamdhu 18 Year Old — paired with a specially curated four-course dinner featuring Caesar salad, mushroom soup, tenderloin and tiramisu.

The tasting sessions encouraged discussion about the influence of maturation techniques, particularly the role of sherry casks, while showcasing the distinct personalities of the two distilleries. The event also featured a bespoke cocktail made with Glengoyne 12 Year Old, demonstrating how the single malt could be adapted into contemporary cocktail culture without losing its signature character.

As the evening progressed, live DJ performances and a saxophonist transformed the formal dining experience into a relaxed social gathering, reflecting Jakarta’s increasingly vibrant premium nightlife scene.

Gordon Dundas, representing Ian Macleod Distillers, said Indonesia had emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s most promising whisky markets.

“By combining Glengoyne’s commitment to slow distillation and complex character with Tamdhu’s dedication to exclusive sherry cask maturation, we believe these single malts offer something distinctive for Indonesian consumers. We are pleased to partner with Cikel Abadi and see significant potential for both brands in this dynamic market,” he said.

Meanwhile, Edhi Sumadi, who leads the introduction of the two brands in Indonesia, said local consumers had become more sophisticated in their appreciation of premium whisky.

“Whisky enthusiasts today are looking beyond well-known labels. They want to understand the craftsmanship, provenance and stories behind every dram they enjoy. That is what makes Glengoyne and Tamdhu stand out,” he said.

Industry observers note that Indonesia’s premium whisky segment has expanded steadily in recent years, supported by rising disposable incomes, the growth of fine dining establishments and a new generation of consumers seeking authentic experiences rather than luxury products alone.

Following their official launch, Glengoyne and Tamdhu will gradually become available at selected premium bars, restaurants and whisky destinations across Indonesia. Their arrival adds another chapter to the country’s evolving appreciation of single malt Scotch whisky, where heritage, patience and craftsmanship are becoming as important as the spirit itself.
