IndonesianTalk.com — Purnomo Yusgiantoro Elected by Acclamation to Lead IKAL Lemhannas for 2025–2030
Purnomo Yusgiantoro has been elected by acclamation as Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Ikatan Keluarga Alumni Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional (IKAL Lemhannas) for the 2025–2030 term.
The decision was reached during the 4th National Congress (Munas) of IKAL Lemhannas, held at the Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional Republik Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Saturday (April 11, 2026).
The election proceeded without a vote, as delegates from regional and branch chapters across Indonesia unanimously agreed on Purnomo as the sole candidate.
Succeeds Agum Gumelar
Purnomo succeeds Agum Gumelar, a retired general widely regarded as a unifying figure within the organization.
Participants described the leadership transition as both a continuation of consolidation and a strategic step toward strengthening IKAL Lemhannas’ future direction.
Extensive Cross-Sector Experience
Purnomo is known for his extensive background spanning academia, government, and international energy diplomacy. A graduate of Institut Teknologi Bandung, he later earned advanced degrees from the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Colorado in the United States.
He served as Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources from 2000 to 2009, followed by his tenure as Minister of Defense from 2009 to 2014.
Toward a Strategic Think Tank
In his inaugural remarks, Purnomo emphasized the need to transform IKAL Lemhannas into a more impactful institution.
“IKAL Lemhannas must become a major hub of strategic thinking for the nation,” he said.
He stressed that the organization should move beyond its traditional role as an alumni network and actively contribute policy recommendations to the government.
Focus on Emerging Strategic Issues
Under Purnomo’s leadership, IKAL Lemhannas is expected to prioritize key national resilience issues, including food security, energy resilience, and cybersecurity.
He highlighted that the evolving global landscape—marked by geopolitical rivalry, energy transitions, and digital threats—requires a multidimensional approach to national resilience.
The congress concluded with strong support for the new leadership, amid expectations that IKAL Lemhannas will play a more significant role in shaping Indonesia’s strategic policy discourse.
