The Muhammadiyah Arts and Culture Institute (LSB) of DKI Jakarta is honored to present the drama “Sang Surya Di Atas Lautan (Ir. H. Djuanda)”.

Yesterday, on Friday, June 14, 2024, a cordial meeting took place between the Muhammadiyah Arts and Culture Institute (LSB) of DKI Jakarta and the family of Ir. H. Djuanda.

The event was held at the residence of one of Ir. H. Djuanda’s grandchildren in the Pondok Indah area of South Jakarta.

Representing the family of Ir. H. Djuanda were Ismeth Wibowo and Iwanshah Wibisono, his grandchildren. Meanwhile, the LSB Muhammadiyah DKI Jakarta delegation included Prof. Imamudin, Chairman of LSB, Imam Maarif, Bambang, and Lelly Qodariah.

The drama “Sang Surya Di Atas Lautan (Ir. H. Djuanda)” narrates the life journey of Ir. H. Djuanda, a dedicated Muhammadiyah cadre who fought selflessly with pure idealism.

The young Djuanda began his struggle in the Muhammadiyah educational sector in 1934, serving as the Director of Muhammadiyah High School in Jakarta.

At the age of 23, despite being offered a lucrative position as an assistant professor at the Technische Hoge School with a fantastic salary of 275 guilders, which was even ready to be increased to 300 guilders, Djuanda chose to dedicate himself to Muhammadiyah as a form of struggle to enlighten the nation.

When Japan occupied Indonesia in 1942, Djuanda continued to guide Muhammadiyah youth. His belief that the strength of the youth could be harnessed for the independence struggle proved true. In 1945, when Japan was defeated by American atomic bombs, Djuanda led Muhammadiyah youth to take control of the railway system in Jakarta.

This action received high appreciation from Ir. Soekarno, who later appointed him as the first Head of the Indonesian Railways and Minister of Transportation in 1953.

On August 17, 1950, the government established the Pepuska Foundation (Central Ship Control Foundation). In 1952, representing the government, Ir. H. Djuanda decided to dissolve Pepuska and integrate its capital into PT PELNI.

Djuanda’s struggle did not stop there. He continued to serve in various government cabinets, even as they changed hands in 1951 and 1952. In 1953, Djuanda was trusted to lead two agencies simultaneously: the Ministry of Transportation and the Director of the State Planning Bureau, the precursor to the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas.

One of Djuanda’s monumental works was safeguarding Indonesia’s maritime territory through the Djuanda Declaration. Ir. H. Djuanda successfully extended Indonesia’s territorial sea boundaries from 12 miles to 200 miles, which was eventually accepted by the United Nations in the 1982 Third UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). With this declaration, Indonesia became a country with vast maritime territory.

During his lifetime, Ir. H. Djuanda also served as Acting President, Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance, Minister of Public Works, Minister of Transportation, the first President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia, and the first Chairman of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI).

Ir. H. Djuanda passed away on November 7, 1963, as the First Minister/Titular General of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, leaving a legacy of struggle remembered for generations. His work solidified Indonesia as a great maritime nation, with the shining sun over the Indonesian sea symbolizing the eternity of his struggle.

The drama “Sang Surya Di Atas Lautan (Ir. H. Djuanda)” is expected to inspire the younger generation to continue building the nation with the same spirit demonstrated by Ir. H. Djuanda.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this inspiring drama on November 20, 2024, at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta.
