IndonesianTalk.com — Association of Catholic Universities in Indonesia Discusses Latest Disruptive Era and Campus Mental Fragility

The Association of Catholic Universities (APTIK) held its 41st congress in Jakarta, attended by 22 Catholic educational foundations managing 23 Catholic universities across Indonesia.

This congress highlights new phenomena in higher education, particularly a new paradigm referred to as BANI (Brittle, Anxiety, Non-Linear, and Illusion of predictability), replacing the old concept of VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity), as a depiction of the latest disruptive era.

A major focus of the congress is the significant impact felt by teaching curricula on the emergence of mental fragility phenomena within campus environments.

Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya Jakarta hosted the congress from March 21st to 23rd, 2024.

The congress also served as a moment to celebrate APTIK’s 40th Anniversary, inaugurated with a Eucharistic Celebration by the Archbishop of Jakarta, Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo.

Prof. Dr. B.S. Kusbiantoro, Chairman of APTIK, stated that the congress not only discusses the phenomena of the latest disruption era but also several other serious issues, including intensive collaboration on a broader scale and the implementation of dual-degree programs with renowned foreign universities.

The VUCA paradigm, dominating global thinking since the early 90s, has now shifted to the BANI paradigm since 2020, as a result of globalization’s influence, creating widespread complexity and uncertainty worldwide.

The concept of Brittle from BANI highlights the illusion of strength, Anxiety presents the illusion of control, Non-Linear creates the illusion of predictability, and Illusion of predictability produces the illusion of knowledge.

Kusbiantoro emphasizes the importance of APTIK in anticipating the impacts of these phenomena by undertaking necessary adaptations to prevent the increasing mental fragility within campus environments, both domestically and internationally.

Additionally, Linus M. Setiadi, Chairman of the Atma Jaya Foundation, which hosted this congress, emphasized the importance of collaboration on a broader scale, from within the APTIK itself, government, and the industrial sector.

This is considered a strategic step considering the role and function of higher education currently facing serious challenges.

In the context of national development towards Indonesia Emas 2045, APTIK is also expected to contribute by establishing universities in the National Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan, to accelerate Indonesia’s economic transformation which has so far been centralized in Java, Sumatra, and Bali.

Prof. Dr. dr. Yuda Turana, Sp.S(K), Rector of Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya as the host, expressed his support for the collaboration and synergy undertaken by APTIK.

Turana highlights the importance of collaboration in the tridharma field with shared missions and visions within the APTIK environment, expected to not only produce revolutionary innovations but also resilient young generations.

As an institution continuously evolving, APTIK has 22 Catholic Universities spread across various regions in Indonesia. From Sumatra to East Nusa Tenggara, APTIK continues to strive to provide its best contribution to the advancement of higher education in Indonesia.
